Illegal community levies scaring away investors from Rivers - CAGI
COMMUNITY Anti-Graft Initiative, CAGI, has stated that illegal levies imposed on businesses in their areas were scaring away investors from come into Rivers State.
CAGI, which on the sideline of the recent clash between Aluu Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state and Omega Power Ministries over the alleged illegal levies imposed on OPM's free hospital in the area, by the community.
President of CAGI, Comrade Uche Odungweru, condemned the corrupt practice of extorting corporate institutions, and individuals doing business in the state by communities.
He said, "We condemn extortion of businesses by communities, especially the illegal levies imposed on the business people, in the guise of social responsibility to the host community.
"While, we condemn the level of extortion and illegal levies imposed on the business people, The Community Anti-Graft Initiative commend the efforts of the Rivers state Government in fighting crime and maintaining peace in communities."
Odungweru, however, called on the Rivers State Ministry of Chieftaincy and Community Affairs to direct the traditional rulers in the state to take the cases of extortion of corporate institutions in their domain, as a matter of public importance.
Odungweru added, "If this act of extortion is not controlled, Rivers State will be the highest in the rank of States, where extortion is prevalent. And that will scare potential investors."
