THE Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and the pace at which the remediation process in impacted communities of Ogoni in Rivers State has been carried out by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP.
The Minister of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Abubakar, spoke on Friday, during his first on-the-spot assessment tour of the polluted sites undergoing remediation in Ogoniland.
Speaking, Abubakar reiterated FG’s commitment to the cleanup of Ogoniland, adding that he was impressed with the pace at which the work is progressing.
The Minister noted that the clean up was a mirage before President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office, urging people of the area to give the administration and HYPREP the required support to ensure success of the project.
He said: “History is being made today. The issue of Ogoni cleanup has been a mirage for the longest time until the coming of President Mohammadu Buhari who promised to cleanup Ogoni and behold, he is working his talk. Ogoni is being cleaned up because it has gone from mirage to reality and today we are talking about actuality, because it is actually being cleaned up.
“This shows the commitment of the government, the commitment of the president. And I believe, every Nigerian, not just from Ogoniland should give this project a chance.

“I have been to several sites and have seen the stages of work, from excavation to the actual treatment of the soil and from different depth of various places based on the level of contamination. We have seen it for ourselves; I can say this is a big success for this administration, and the people of Ogoni.”
However, the project coordinator, HYPREP, Dr. Marvin Dekil, had informed the minister that commenced process to provide good drinking water to impacted communities of Ogoni.
Dekil said: “In April 2017 when the project coordination office started and we hit the ground running by looking at the recommendation of UNEP that stated clearly the mandate for remediation of impacted sites as well as restore livelihood.
“There were also some recommendations for water in specific communities. So one of the first things we did was to do a mapping of all the water facilities across the four LGAs and that, database exist, we have since followed up on that, and commenced procurement process to secure the water company that will provide water in specific communities as well as extended communities.
“We are to draw up some memorandum of understanding with the Rivers state government to enable us use their moribund facilities so as to also help provide water. So, the MoU with Rivers state government is been concluded and ready for signing as I speak today.”
